Industry Outlook > Insurance Brokers Concerned about Flood & Earthquake
The Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC) provided a sneak preview of their new consumer awareness initiative that will help Canadians better understand the risks of overland flooding and earthquake. The national campaign, entitled the “The Big If”, will be formally launched to the public in the coming weeks. Insurance brokers from across the country are in Ottawa to introduce the initiative to MPs, Senators, and public policy makers.
“No community is immune from natural disasters. Every spring we see catastrophic flooding from rising lakes and rivers or heavy rainfalls that devastates communities, businesses and families. In addition, certain regions of the country are vulnerable to earthquakes, and a major seismic event could have severe consequences,” stated Peter Braid, IBAC CEO and former parliamentarian.
“The Big If” is an innovative public awareness campaign that will include links to information about risks and suggested mitigation measures. IBAC will also be encouraging Canadians to talk to their broker about available insurance options that will protect them from financial loss. Given the trust-based relationships between insurance brokers and their clients, brokers are uniquely positioned to start the conversation.
“Governments, academia, and the private sector must all work together to protect Canadians from natural disasters and ensure the resilience and well-being of families, businesses and communities”, emphasized Braid. “As a responsible stakeholder, IBAC is doing its part to raise awareness and be part of the solution.”
Insurance brokers have consistently demonstrated their strong commitment to consumer protection. “The Big If” will continue this focus and promote the important role of the insurance broker in educating Canadians and helping them protect their financial well-being.
