An expert speaks out on the importance of regulating online sales

posted on July 27, 2016

In addition to the insurance sector, other industries are grappling with issues surrounding consumers and online sales. In general, company's business practices are facing growing scrutiny…

According to the experts, the main challenge posed by the Internet is ease of access. In one or two clicks, consumers can purchase the goods or services they want and can enter into contractual agreements without always taking the time to analyze all the details. Online contracts are often lengthy and in a context of instant decision-making, few people take the time to read them in full.

Michel Solis, an attorney specializing in IT, cites the example of Google's terms of service, which every Gmail account holder must agree to: "When you upload, submit, store, send or receive content to or through our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works (such as those resulting from translations, adaptations or other changes we make so that your content works better with our Services), communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content."

In essence, the above sentence gives Google the right to use your emails for business or advertising purposes at any time and without notifying you!
