Online insurance sales: a key issue at the AMF Rendezvous

posted on November 23, 2018

On November 19, the Autorité des marchés financiers held its annual "rendezvous", which always attracts the main actors in the financial sector.

The guest speakers this year included Louis Morisset, president and CEO of the AMF, followed by the provincial finance minister, Eric Girard, who laid out his vision and his main goals for the financial sector. The RCCAQ was asked to take part in the panel discussion entitled: "Online insurance sales: which oversight model should the regulator focus on?"

To mark the occasion, Patrice Pouliot, RCCAQ chair, shared certified representatives' perspective on online sales of insurance products. Noting that the oversight mechanism for this new distribution channel must guarantee a high level of protection in order to be equivalent to that currently offered by certified representatives, Mr. Pouliot underscored various enforcement-related challenges, particularly as regards consumer liability, as well as a number of potential development areas that this new reality will open up for the industry.

This event was organized in conjunction with the consultation on the regulatory framework for online insurance sales in which the RCCAQ is taking part. In this regard, the RCCAQ will be submitting its position paper to the AMF by December 10.
