Year in review: the RCCAQ gets political

posted on December 14, 2016

The RCCAQ's primary mission is to defend the socio-economic interests of brokerage firms and brokers, which requires us to maintain constructive relationships with various government actors. With your support, we were able to fulfil our mission this year. Here's a look back at some of the highlights of 2016.

OPERATION BILL 188

The RCCAQ stepped up its lobbying efforts with elected officials and political decision makers with a view to promoting our positions and defending brokers' interests with respect to Bill 188:

  • Multiple communications were issued concerning our position paper on Bill 188.
  • Information was sent to MNAs on Bill 188-related issues of concern to brokers.
  • Meetings with MNAs and brokers were held to explain various issues surrounding the proposed amendments.
  • Meetings and discussions were held with AMF officials.
  • The RCCAQ's chair took part in a dozen conferences and forums focusing on proposed amendments to Bill 188.
  • Media articles were published.

HIGHLY SATISFACTORY PARLIAMENT HILL DAY IN QUEBEC CITY ON MAY 25

  • A dozen or so meetings were held throughout the day, during which we discussed proposed amendments to Bill 188.
  • We also raised other concerns, including tax harmonization, the permanent tax credit and business transfers between related individuals.
  • The highlight of the day was clearly our meeting with finance minister Carlos Leitão, who met in person with our delegation.

IMPORTANT MEETINGS IN OTTAWA

  • An RCCAQ delegation accompanied representatives of the IBAC and its president, Stéphane Bernatchez, to Parliament Hill in Ottawa on June 7 for a series of meetings with elected officials and federal government representatives.
  • The Bank Act and tax issues surrounding business transfers were discussed. This was the first time that representatives of the RCCAQ and the IBAC had traveled to Ottawa since the election of Justin Trudeau's Liberal government.

BILL 188 INITIATIVE CONTINUES TO MOBILIZE RCCAQ MEMBERS

Although the introduction of Bill 188 has been postponed, this issue will continue to guide our actions. Needless to say, we need you to stay mobilized in this regard. Please watch out for our related communications, including an update in January 2017.

NEXT MAJOR BATTLE

The Bank Act will be revised in 2019. We must begin preparing our lobbying campaign right away to ensure that brokers' interests are well defended.
