Anti-spam legislation: are you in compliance?

posted on July 12, 2017

Canada's anti-spam legislation came into effect on July 1, 2014. Individuals and businesses are now prohibited from sending out commercial emails without the recipients' prior consent.

On July 1, 2017, an additional step was going to be taken with the application of new provisions facilitating legal action against violators. A few weeks prior to that date, however, the federal government decided to suspend the new provisions in response to concerns expressed by businesses and other organizations for which the threat of legal action was simply too great.

Nevertheless, the legislation remains in effect and companies that break the law still run the risk of a fine.

Various information sources are available for those wishing to check their best practices. We have provided a link to one of them below (article published in the June 29 issue of Le Journal de l'assurance).
