According to Insurance Bureau of Canada findings, 50% of Quebecers say they never received information on earthquake insurance; most believe erroneously that this coverage is automatically included in their home insurance.
Since earthquakes are an insurable risk, it goes without saying that brokers are required to offer this coverage to all their clients. Unfortunately, some brokers assume that the risk is minimal and the chances of an earthquake are very low. As a result, they don't raise the issue. Nevertheless, various parts of Quebec are earthquake zones, so the risk of damages is all too real!
You are strongly advised to discuss this risk with your clients, just as you would discuss water damage, which occurs much more frequently and is a higher-profile issue.
Some brokers are now using a checklist when reviewing their clients' files. They would do well to add a few questions about earthquakes! Here's a checklist that you could use.
In the event that an earthquake occurred causing significant damage, many brokers would face potential legal action by clients who were affected but not insured. Be sure to avoid unpleasant surprises and give your clients the information they need!
