Management and Training: Best Practices

Catherine_rioux.jpgWe have now begun the second year of the 2014-2015 reference period. Therefore, it is essential that you complete your professional development unit (PDU) requirements before year-end and that you familiarize yourself with the best practices associated with mandatory training. Here are some tips to bring you up to speed on this topic.

Training management: best practices

  1. At the beginning of each year, evaluate your employees' training requirements to ensure that the activities you select meet a real need. That way, you will maximize your training investment.
  2. Appoint one person per department (commercial and individual insurance) to be in charge of coordinating the planning and purchasing of training services for the office.
  3. This same person should also be in charge of compiling training certificates for each employee (i.e. proof of successful completion).
  4. Training activities should be planned over a two-year period.
  5. Diversify the ways that training activities are delivered (e.g. online, private sessions, public activities). That also allows you to assign different activities to different employees more effectively.
  6. Use a checklist to keep track of which employees have completed which activities. That way, you can ensure compliance with CHAD's new training regulations (http://www.chad.ca/en/members/training/252/my-continuing-education-obligations).
  7. Use a spreadsheet to calculate your investment in employee training. You could also include travel costs, training costs, employees' hourly rates, etc. (see Excel spreadsheet).
  8. Calculate your return on investment! Take the time to follow up on whether your employees are incorporating their newfound knowledge in their practices. Training is a good investment--so be sure to measure the positive impact on your firm!
