The thought is on the minds of entrepreneurs and managers in all parts of the economy, including the insurance brokerage sector: there is a crying need for qualified labour in Québec, as in other parts of the world. Against that backdrop, the RCCAQ is seeking solutions and strategies and would like to identify its members’ more specific needs.

It should be noted that a study conducted in the summer of 2020 (French version only) by the CPRAD (Coalition pour une relève en assurance de dommages) showed that from September 2020 to September 2023, some 20% of the positions in Québec’s insurance sector will be vacant, representing nearly 6,000 jobs. Of that number, the insurance broker profession has the greatest shortfall, with 2,600 vacant positions. We are right in the middle of that timeline.

Update and strategies

The project entitled “Workforce update and strategic recommendations for attracting and retaining talent” is about to be launched now that the RCCAQ’s HR committee, chaired by Marie-Pierre Fortin (designated by the board of directors), has selected an external consultant. With over 35 years of HR management experience, France Despatie has been mandated by the RCCAQ to carry out this project.

There are three specific goals:

⇒ Provide a more fact-based update on the labour issues facing insurance brokerage firms in Québec and on the macroeconomic context of employment.

Collate standardized data on the workforce to better target high-risk areas and potential action areas.

⇒ Outline the action areas for attracting and retaining talent for the next five years.

To those ends, a detailed methodology will be assembled, including analyses of the sector’s context, issues and risks, as well as strategies and alignment of talent management programs.

Call for participants

project committee will be put in place to ensure that insurance brokerage firms play a central role in the upcoming work. The RCCAQ is calling on its members to take part over the next three or four months. A launch meeting will be held on August 23, 2022 from 9:00 AM to noon; a total of four meetings will be held, so participants should be fully available.

To be on the project committee, interested parties are asked to send an email to communications@rccaq.com with “HR project committee” in the subject line. The deadline is August 2. It is hoped that a dozen brokerages will be represented on the committee. If more than a dozen brokerages indicate their interest, the selection process will be as representative as possible.
