COVID-19 : informations > COVID-19: smiles are back!
April showers bring May flowers, they say. And May brought smiles, didn't it? The COVID-19 pandemic may not be quite over, at least not 100%. But it’s certainly nice to see a semblance of normality return to our workplaces and our day-to-day activities.
On May 13, the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST) [Québec’s labour standards board] issued a press release tying in with the relaxation of workplace public health requirements, including the end of compulsory mask-wearing, except on public transit and in healthcare settings. Needless to say, people are still allowed to wear masks. As a precautionary measure, mask-wearing is recommended when interacting with high-risk individuals or during gatherings in confined spaces. The RCCAQ agrees with the CNESST: employers and workers should focus on dialogue and kindness during this transition.
It should also be noted that maintaining a minimum distance of one metre between individuals in workplaces, along with physical barriers, is no longer compulsory, although these practices are still recommended. Even though mask-wearing and physical distancing are no longer required, high-quality masks should remain available in all workplaces. This will help to protect the health and safety of everyone involved.
It is important to note that all employers are responsible for taking steps to protect workers’ health, safety and physical/emotional well-being, as set out in the Act respecting occupational health and safety. According to the Act, workers must take the necessary measures to protect their own health and to ensure their own safety and physical/emotional well-being while ensuring that they do not endanger the health, safety or physical/emotional well-being of other individuals in the workplace.
Since the pandemic began, the provincial government has reported more than million confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Québec and over 15,300 deaths. For the time being, the situation is said to be under control.
The RCCAQ advises its members that all employers are responsible for making the best possible decisions for their company while showing flexibility towards employees. As always, listening to others is important.
So don’t forget to smile again!
