Groupe Verrier specializes in business insurance. When Sylvain Turgeon joined in 2006, he was eager to take on his new management role. Managing the Sherbrooke office of this large firm represented a step forward in his career.

A few years later, he was appointed partner and vice-president. This was when the "perfect fit" between Sylvain and Groupe Verrier really came into focus. During his first few years with the firm, Sylvain had expressed his desire to make a bigger contribution by pursuing his university studies while continuing to work. Although he already had some experience behind him, he was sure that furthering his education would enhance his decision-making skills, not only in terms of the firm's business, but also in terms of managing his clients' files. Sylvain thoroughly enjoyed his studies and was awarded an executive MBA!

"The best career decision I ever made was to further my education," says Sylvain. "The business insurance field is highly complex. The MBA program opened up new horizons for me and gave me a grounding that enhances the decisions I make today."

At Groupe Verrier, Sylvain found a firm dedicated to client service; he also found an employer willing to support his career development. This approach lies at the heart of the firm's philosophy: investing in human capital is designed to enhance Groupe Verrier's reputation for cutting-edge expertise.

As Sylvain explains: "At Groupe Verrier, our philosophy has two underlying principles: our brokers have individual areas of expertise, but we work as a team on each client file. And we need both of those aspects. Each client file is assigned the specialists who are best qualified in certain areas. The teams that we put together collaborate to meet the client's needs. We believe that when it comes to business insurance, since the industries involved are so complex and there are so many particularities, assigning only one broker to a file is not the best approach."
"We really believe that if you want to be a better broker, you need to have an understanding of economics, risk management and business operations. You also need a firm grasp of accounting and finance.” Sylvain Turgeon
This specialization approach prompted the firm to go even further in the area of staff development. In 2015, management decided to quadruple its training budget. "Our activities are not exclusively focused on earning training units [PDUs], but rather on professional development itself. We support a variety of training activities, including FCIP, CIP and RMC, along with other related activities. But what I believe in most strongly is providing our resources with the guidance they need: in other words, coaching in action. It's the best way to ensure that knowledge is transferred effectively and that are values are transmitted to each of our employees," adds Sylvain.

This approach has another advantage: it also enables the firm to gradually develop the next generation of managers in house. By offering career guidance, the firm's leadership can identify which employees have the potential to integrate the management team and then step up their responsibilities.

This is a longstanding approach for the firm, which has passed along the management torch from generation to generation over the years. Groupe Verrier was founded in 1939 by Robert Verrier. His son Michel took the helm in 1963 and oversaw a period of strong growth. Still passionate about insurance, Michel continues to play an active role within Groupe Verrier, although he is now supported by four partners (Éric Verrier, Sylvain Turgeon, Marian Jacob and Éric Desrosiers).

In terms of operations, staff training helps boost the firm's efficiency and gives the brokers greater insight into clients' realities. Consequently, Groupe Verrier's reputation is enhanced.
